Administrative history / biography
Gillingham Borough Council was incorporated on 17 August 1903. It succeeded Gillingham Urban District Council (1893-1903), which in turn was preceded by the Gillingham Local Board of Health (1874-1893) and the manor of Gillingham, whose records date from 1315. In 1929 Gillingham was enlarged by the transfer of the parish of Rainham from Milton Rural District Council. In 1998 Gillingham Borough Council and Rochester upon Medway City Council combined to become the present day Medway Council.
