    The school opened on 24 February 1896, with an intake of 262 boys for the morning classes. Many boys were turned away as the school was full. The staff comprised Mr G. Rogers, Headmaster, two assistants and one pupil teacher. Standard 1 contained 102 boys with just one teacher, Mr Burnham.
