The school first opened in January 1948. It was originally known as Hundred of Hoo County Modern School and was housed in the old Wainscott Primary School building. Pupils came from Cliffe, Cooling, Stoke, Hoo St. Werburgh, High Halstow, Allhallows and Grain. The school was under the control of the Kent County Council Education Committee. The Head Teacher at that time was Mr H.B. Smith. In September 1956 pupils began to move over to the new school buildings, constructed by Kent County Council on the edge of the village of Hoo. The official opening took place on 3 July 1957. At that time the school had approximately 450 students.
