- Administrative history / biographyThe Medway and Swale Dock Labour Board was part of the National Dock Labour Board. Its offices were at Blue Boar Lane, Rochester. The Dock Labour Boards were established in 1947 to regularise employment in the docks. They were established as a response to the Dock Strikes of 1945 and to the casual nature of dock workers' employment. The National Board was made up of a number of local boards that consisted of a 50/50 representation of dock workers and port employers. Each local board was responsible for the registration of dock workers, payment, training, health and disciplinary matters. The boards were abolished in 1989 further to the Dock Work Act 1989.
