This collection consists of former public records that have been presented via the National Archives under a Public Records (Presentation of Records) Instrument. The instrument indicates that whilst these records were once public records as defined by the Public Records Act 1958 they are no longer such and have been donated to an approved record office with the permission of the Lord Chancellor, i.e. they have been identified as not suitable for retention at the National Archives, but may be of interest to local record offices. The records were previously in the custody of the Environment Agency and its predecessor the National Rivers Authority.
