This circuit was inaugurated in 1932, when the Methodist Church was formed nationally, and resulted from the merger of the local Wesleyan Methodist, Primitive Methodist and United Methodist churches' local circuits, except for the old Wesleyan Methodist (after 1932, Methodist) Chatham Garrison Circuit, which merged with the Medway Towns Circuit in 1966.
