    The school was erected in 1870 to accommodate 170 children. It was enlarged in 1887 to hold 220 pupils. Kelly's Directory of 1890 states that W. Sharman was Master of the Mixed School; Miss Springell was the Mistress of the Infant School. The school was originally known as Borstal National School No 1. It later became St. Matthew's Church of England Primary, then latterly St. Matthew's Church of England Infant School.
