    This was previously the school for the Medway Poor Law Union Cottage Homes at Pattens Lane (see also the sub-collection G/Me/C within the Medway Poor Law Union records). The Cottage Homes opened in 1903 and included a school building. When the Poor Law Unions were dissolved in the early 1930s the students were transferred to the nearby (and newly built) Balfour Road School, Chatham.
